Graduating from Vantan Design College in 1979, Kuwahara joined Issey Miyake Design Studio in 1989. In 1994, he became chief designer of the I.S. brand, which became I.S. Sunao Kuwahara. He moved over to an affiliated company A-net in 1996 and showed his brand under the name sunaokuwahara in Tokyo during the Spring/Summer 2003 season.
